New Delhi: 2017 could not have ended on a better note for Gurugram, as the city’s waste management system got a massive infrastructural boost. Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar on December 13 flagged off 150 garbage collection vehicles in Gurugram and Faridabad. Along with the flagging off of these vehicles, it was also announced that 15 solid waste transfer stations would be constructed, and the foundation stones for 11 of these solid waste transfer stations were laid by the Chief Minister.
Despite being one of north India’s premier commercial hubs, Gurugram did not make it to India’s top 100 clean city’s list in Swachh Survekshan 2017, securing a rank of 112. The city’s several residential societies have complained for long about the inept door-to-door garbage collection system. The Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) in turn has said that lack of enough waste recycling plants and space to scientifically treat waste has resulted in waste being a serious problem in the city. With 150 garbage collection vehicles in their arsenal, the city civic body can now assure Gugugram’s citizens of better door-to-door garbage collection facilities.

The garbage transfer sites, 11 in Guguram and 4 in Faridabad will see conversion of garbage to electricity on a daily basis. The Chief Minister said that up to 10 megawatt of electricity will be generated daily from the garbage which is disposed in the transfer sites and processed. The waste collected by the waste collectors affiliated to MCG will be segregated at different points in the city. The garbage transfer sites are expected to come up by February 2019.
The Chief Minister also announced that the entire state of Haryana has been divided into 15 clusters for waste management. Global tenders have been invited for each cluster. Under each cluster, waste collection, management and conversion of waste to energy or compost will take place. The cities of Gurugram and Faridabad have been kept under one cluster. While the garbage transfer sites will not come up before February 2019, the fleet of 150 garbage collection vehicles can be utilised well to address door-to-door garbage collection grievances, giving Gurugram a better chance to improve its ranking during Swachh Survekshan 2018, scheduled to begin from January 4, 2018.
